This is a Hi Tide Campground review. Hi Tide loses points for it's owner that likes to sneak up on campers and yell at people on the lake! While there is something for everyone, the way the owner treats campers will make us not want to go back.
Hi Tide is located in Leland, IL, just an hour to an hour and a half outside of Chicago, Illinois. We used to spend several weekends at Hi Tide each summer. Unfortunately the way the owner has treated people has caused us to not want to frequent Hi-Tide any longer. From yelling at young children who are slightly overweight on to sneaking up on campers at night spying on and listing to camp fire conversations without people knowing he's there. It's just not a place we would recommend.
Overall Rating & Cost
Campground Rating
This campground gets 5 campers from me. This is updated from the 4.5 since they have added an all-inclusive rate this summer so there are not a bunch of fees that we have to pay when we go. Even with a couple extra fees, this campground is well worth it for everything that is included! Their rates are well within the rates that we've paid all over the mid-west for campgrounds that offer much less.
Costs
- Campground: Average Nightly Rate: $36 - $49 (depending on site)
- Cabins: $82
Camping Sites
Sites at Hi Tide are average in size. Some are very large, and there are a couple smaller ones. For full hook up, they have sites that can accommodate small travel trailers and RV's up to 40 feet.
RV Rental & Cabin Rentals
Hi Tide has 3 cabins that they rent out. The cabins are just ok. One thing that would improve the cabins would be for the owners to add a fridge and microwave to them. Other than that, they are very sufficient for a weekend away in a cabin type feel.
Amenities
The main bath house was clean, but please note: you must bring quarters to take a shower. The lake water toys are fun! The dance party, shuffleboard, sand volleyball, basketball, frog races and bingo are just some of the fun activities at Hi Tide. Activies vary from weekend to weekend and some weekends, even during the summer, there are no activities. Just something to be aware of.
Staff
The owner shouts the rules over a mega phone and that sometimes gets annoying, often to the point that people leave because they feel they are unwelcome. If your child is too young to use the deep end water toys, but is overweight, they won't be able to use the shallow water toys either. And the owner will call your child out over his mega phone to let them know to get off because they are too big for it. No rational for how he picks and chooses his rules. At night, 11pm is quiet hours and he means quiet. If you shuffle your cards too loud, he will be there to tell you to quiet down. Ice makers? make sure those are off at night or he'll knock on your camper to tell you it's too loud. Office staff? Under trained and inexperienced in customer service.
